Gujarat: 4.2-magnitude earthquake hits Bharuch, tremors felt in Surat

SURAT: Several parts of Surat and Bharuch districts felt tremors on Saturday afternoon. According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) website, the earthquake was of 4.2 magnitude on Richter scale and the epicentre was 53 kilometre northeast of Surat and 36 kilometre east-south-east of Bharuch district.
According to the NCS website, the time of the quake was 3.39 pm. The epicentre of the quake was at Netrang taluka’s Mota Malpore village in Bharuch district.
Residents in most parts of Surat city, Bharuch district, Olpaad taluka and Bardoli taluka rushed out of their homes, especially the high-rise buildings following the tremors.
Sources said that two tremors were felt for less than 3 seconds in many parts of Surat including Nanpura, Athwalines, Rander, Adajan, Chowk Bazaar, Katargam etc.
In Bharuch town, the residents in the residential areas and business establishments rushed out of their premises following the tremors.
President of Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI), Dinesh Navadiya said, “We felt the tremors on the fourth floor of the SGCCI headquarter at Nanpura. The tremors lasted for few seconds. In many parts of Surat, residents experienced the quake”
An officer in the Bharuch district administration said, “Tremors of 4.2 magnitude was felt in many parts of Bharuch district. The epicentre is 36 km East-South East from Bharuch town. There are no reports of loss to life or property due to the tremors”
