The result is also crucial for former chief minister Kamal Nath, who lost power in the state seven months ago after the revolt by Scindia.
In a big boost for Shivraj Singh -led government, BJP is leading on 21 seats, while Congress and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) are ahead on six and one seats, respectively in Madhya Pradesh by-polls. The result of 28 assembly bypolls is important for Shivaraj Singh Chauhan as his government requires the support of at least eight MLAs to gain majority mark and stay in power in the state.

The result is also crucial for former chief minister Kamal Nath, who lost power in the state seven months ago after the revolt by Jyotiraditya Scindia. It is also a big test of the Jyotiraditya Scindia factor as the scion of the erstwhile royal family of Gwalior had quit the Congress with his loyalist MLAs, who are now fighting on BJP tickets.

ET Insta Analysis by Aman Sharma--- BJP set to retain power in Madhya Pradesh as BJP has leads in 19 out of the 28 seats which went to the by-polls in the state. The BJP only needed to win eight seats to attain the majority figure and the people seem to have voted for Shivraj Chouhan to continue as the Chief Minister. BJP has notched up a good performance in the Gwalior-Chambal region too where 16 out of the by-poll seats were located, in a thumbs up to influence of Jyotiraditya Scindia in his fiefdom. As per EC, BJP has polled close to 51% of the votes against 41% by the Congress which under Kamal Nath, is leading only on nine seats and people seem not to have bought into the party's campaign pitch of punishing the "25 traitor MLAs" who deserted the party bringing down the Nath government in March.
