West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh’s convoy came under attack in Jaigaon area of Alipurduar district on Thursday where he had gone to attend a party programme.

Stones were hurled and black flags were shown at Ghosh’s convoy. Several people carrying flags and banner of Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) were seen raising slogans against Ghosh, asking him to leave. Ghosh’s vehicle was partially damaged in the attack. A team of police officers brought the situation under control after forcing the protesters and BJP supporters to disperse.

The GJM, led by Bimal Gurung, had recently joined hands with the TMC.

While the BJP accused the Trinamool of being behind the attack, the ruling party said their cadres were not involved in the incident.

“The TMC and their friends are getting desperate after sensing defeat in the upcoming Assembly polls. However, this
kind of tactics will not work. People are with us. The incident shows that law and order has completely collapsed in the state. In a democracy, such things cannot take place,” Ghosh told reporters.

Festive offer

The attack on Ghosh’s convoy came a few days after he had warned the TMC workers of “consequences if they do not mend their ways”.
BJP vice-president Mukul Roy condemned the attack “by miscreants”. The people of the state would give a befitting reply to the anarchic state govt. BJP will fight till the end to uproot this tyrannical rule of TMC,” he tweeted.

Meanwhile, BJP workers led by MP Saumitra Khan held a demonstration in Kolkata. BJP workers also staged protests at various places in Howrah and South 24 Parganas district.

TMC’s Alipurduar district president Sourav Chakraborty said Ghosh was trying to foment trouble in north Bengal and asserted that TMC activists were not involved in the incident.

“Our workers were not involved in this. Ghosh was here to create tension in the area,” he said.

Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar on Thursday said the attack of state BJP chief Dilip Ghosh’s convoy was “a very serious matter” and alleged that political violence in the state was going on unabated.

“There is no sign of political violence abating. The reason for this is public servants have become political workers. Attack on Ghosh’s convoy is a very serious matter and political violence means danger to the democracy. If the rule of law is compromised, then the state is heading towards anarchy. Security of Opposition leaders is being compromised here,” Dhankhar, who is visiting neighbouring Cooch Behar district, told reporters.

An atmosphere of political violence and vendetta is prevailing in Bengal, he added.

Meanwhile, he said that Cooch Behar district administration did not give him a guard of honour. “The district administration at Cooch Behar was in breach of protocol. There was no guard of honour from West Bengal Police, and the DM and the SP were absent. All indications of politicised working visible,” he tweeted, tagging Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
