Jakarta (ANTARA) - An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale hit the Aceh provincial capital of Banda Aceh on early Saturday, though no tsunami warning was issued, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) stated.

The quake that struck at 1:33 a.m. local time was centered 30 kilometers northeast of Banda Aceh at a depth of 10 kilometers, the agency noted on its official Twitter account.

The quake was felt by people in Banda Aceh at Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale IV and in Lhokseumawe at MMI scale II to III.

A quake of MMI IV could be felt by several people within and outside houses, with the windows or doors creaking and audible wall sounds.

Meanwhile, a quake of MMI II was felt by some people and resulted in the hung light articles shaking, while that of MMI III could be felt indoors akin to the movement of a truck.

A quake of magnitude 5.4 can cause substantial damage to land.

No immediate report was received of casualties or material damage.

An earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale had earlier hit Aceh on Oct 19, though no tsunami warning was issued, according to the local geophysics station.

The quake came four days after a quake of magnitude 5.2 shook Meulaboh District in Aceh on Oct 15.

Aceh had borne the brunt of a 9.1-magnitude quake and subsequent tsunami on December 26, 2004, which led to hundreds of thousands of people losing their lives or going missing.
