Bengalureans have started heading out, with pets in tow. Resorts and home-stays are changing their policies to accommodate them

MS Kiran, a civil engineer, has been calling up a number of resorts/homestays to get away this weekend. Diwali is here and he wants to be in a cracker-free zone as his pet is not too fond of the fireworks. Kiran needs to find a homestay that can accommodate his dog too.

Resorts and homestay owners say they have been receiving several calls, ever since the lockdown was lifted, with this one common query -- do you accommodate pets?
“Many families have adopted pets during and after the lockdown. These pets are now part of the family and so of course if the family wishes to travel, they cannot leave the pets behind. Now that long-distance travel is allowed, many do want to get away. That is why they seek spaces that are animal-friendly,” said an animal lover.

Ramcharan Gowda, who runs Ira Homestay in Chikkamagaluru, told Bangalore Mirror that his establishment has received a number of queries and most families are looking for a pet-friendly stay. “Many want to bring their dogs along. They tell us that they will also bring blankets and all other items of the pets. We are open to pets,” he said.

There is awareness among hotels that are now promising to provide a dedicated area for the pets along with caretakers and pet-friendly food too

Coorg Homestays’ Association president BG Ananthashayana told Mirror that they have been getting inquiries and that quite a few homestays are geared up to welcome the pets. Uttam Hulikere, president of Chikkamagaluru District Home stays’ association said, home stays are understanding the demand and getting ready accordingly. Hulikere shared one experience in which his family and he too got moved by the pets that had come with a group. “Two youngsters had come from Bengaluru. The first thing they wanted to know when they walked into our coffee shop was if our property was open to dogs. When I said yes, they brought their four dogs, all of whom were indie dogs and were blind,” he said.

The dogs certainly had a good stay, but Hulikere says they also moved his daughter and him. “Even those dogs seemed to be having a welcome break in the coffee city. Here, many home stays have started allowing pets. Some are also arranging for small beds so that the dogs can stay with their owners. Dogs are definitely having a great time here and we are also enjoying their company,” he said.

Furry travel companions are welcome at many tourist destinations these days.

Mysore Travels Association President BS Prashanth said they have been getting a lot of queries from travellers who want their pets to come along. “After lockdown was lifted, many wanted to head out of their homes and as their pets too couldn’t go out; they wanted to have a family outing with their pets only. Most of these queries are related to Kodagu and Wayanad properties. There is also awareness among hotels that are now promising to provide a dedicated area for the pets along with caretakers and cooking of pet-friendly foods at their places,” he said.

Suresh Charles, director of The Birchwood Retreat (Kodagu) said that there has been a 50 per cent increase in inquiries from pet owners. “As we have a huge property, dogs have all the freedom to walk around. We allow pets to stay along with owners in their room. We also offer pre-cooked food for dogs based on their preference (veg or non-veg). Some of the owners bring frozen food from their homes for their pets,” he added.

Animal activist Priya Chetty Rajagopal said that many pet owners are eager to travel, especially since it is Diwali time. While a few are planning a short trip in their vehicles to out of Bengaluru, there are a few who desperately want to get out of the city with their pets for Diwali.

Priyanka Sankaran, an analyst based out of Bengaluru, said that pets do love a good outing. She had recently taken her pet to a dog park where the dog had a jolly good time in the pool. She summed up what a dog-owner would look for in a place they take their pets too. “A dog lover seeks a place that is secure for pets so that they don’t escape. There should be fencing for protection, lots of space to run around and overall it should be a safe place for the dogs to play around,” she said.
