The North-East monsoon received a further leg up with the formation of a secondary trough from the Maldives to the South-East Arabian Sea off the Kerala coast on Monday that joined a prevailing one originating from around the same area as the former, but extending towards North Coastal Tamil Nadu.
The troughs act as receptacles for moisture being mopped up by the easterly to south-easterly winds from the Bay of Bengal, turning south-westerly over the Laccadive Sea and along the Kerala coast. The troughs act as a conduit for moisture being directed to land, to precipitate later as rain or thundershowers.
Fairly widespread rain
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast scattered to fairly widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry until Wednesday; and isolated heavy rainfall over Kerala on Wednesday and Tuesday; and over Lakshadweep on Tuesday as the North-East monsoon rustles up further strength.
Meanwhile over North-West India, an incoming western disturbance has moved in from Afghanistan to Pakistan, with an induced (offspring) cyclonic circulation crossing over, across the international border into India over North-West Rajasthan on Monday. The westerlies are stronger when acting in tandem with an offspring circulation.
Western disturbance in the North
The parent western disturbance and the offspring cyclonic circulation could move further to the East into the plains and hills of North-West India on Tuesday one after the other, and hence their impact on weather would further reduce over the region (since they carry weather up in the front), the IMD said.
Light to moderate isolated to scattered rain/snow was the forecast weather over the hills of North-West India and isolated rainfall over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar on Monday. A fresh western disturbance may cause light isolated to scattered rain/snow over the hills from Wednesday to Friday.

Heavy to very heavy rain
During the 24 hours ending Monday morning, rain or thundershowers lashed most places of Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh in North-West India; and Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in South India. Many places over Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi in the North and Rayalaseema and Lakshadweep in the South too reported similar conditions.
Significant rainfall recorded (5 cm or more) during this period: Sriperumbudur 19; Tirupati 15; Marakkanam 12; Mahabalipuram and Tiruvallur 10 each; Kavali 9; Cuddalore 8; Udhampur7; Gwalior and Pondicherry 6 each; Roshanbagh, Karnal, Kumarsen and Mathura 4 each; and Nellore and Tuticorin 5 each. Hailstorms were reported from Hisar, Sonipet and Ludhiana.
