J-K highway to remain closed for vehicular traffic on Friday

The Jammu-Srinagar national highway will remain closed for vehicular traffic for undertaking repair works on Friday, a traffic department advisory said.

"On Friday, there shall be no traffic movement on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway from either side in view of maintenance and repairing of the highway," it said.

The advisory further said that trucks and load carriers may adopt Mughal Road for their journey from Srinagar towards Jammu. "Commuters are advised to plan their journey accordingly," the advisory said.

For the movement of convoys of security forces, it said that security forces are advised and requested not to ply against advisory and traffic plan in view of traffic congestion on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway.

"They may ply from Jammu towards Srinagar," it added.

The advisory said that subject to fair weather and good road conditions only downward traffic shall be allowed from Herpora (Shopian) on Kashmir side from 11.00 am to 4.00 pm towards Poonch (Jammu side).

"No vehicle shall be allowed after the cut-off timing. Moreover, no passenger vehicle or pedestrian shall be allowed on Mughal Road," it added.

The advisory with regard to traffic movement on the Srinagar-Leh highway, said only one-way traffic shall be allowed on the Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumari road from Srinagar towards Kargil.

Maharashtra: Toll tax to increase on 15 PWD roads

The Maharashtra government on Thursday decided to increase the toll tax for heavy vehicles on 15 roads under the Public Works Department's jurisdiction. The increase is proposed to be around 10 per cent which is less than the toll tax on national highways, an official statement said in Mumbai.

Cars, jeeps, State Transport (ST) and school buses and light vehicles will continue to be exempted. At present, these vehicles are exempted from paying on 15 PWD roads where private contractors collect toll tax.

Because of the exemption, the government has to pay Rs 350-400 crore as compensation to these contractors every year, the statement said.

"Instead of giving this compensation in cash, the government decided to increase the toll tax (for heavy vehicles)," it said.

Japan records high of daily virus cases, amid worrying spike

Japan reported a record number of daily coronavirus infections Thursday, amid a worrying spike in a country that has been spared the worst of the pandemic and hopes to host the Olympics next year.

Compared to many other countries, Japan has done well combatting the virus, reporting just under 2,000 deaths in a nation of 126 million since the pandemic began. But Tokyo saw a record number of single-day cases twice this week, and the Health Ministry said Thursday that the national number hit a record with 2,179 new cases.

That’s the first time Japan has had more than 2,000 daily cases since the pandemic began. The previous high was set Saturday.

Pompeo is 1st top US diplomat to visit an Israeli settlement

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Thursday became the first top American diplomat to visit an Israeli settlement in the occupied West Bank as the State Department announced that products from the settlements can be labeled “Made in Israel” in a major policy shift.

The two moves reflected the Trump administration’s acceptance of Israeli settlements, which the Palestinians and most of the international community view as a violation of international law and a major obstacle to peace.

Pompeo also announced that the U.S. would brand the international Palestinian-led boycott movement against Israel as “anti-Semitic” and bar any groups that participate in it from receiving government funding. It was not immediately clear which groups would be affected by the move.

In a Twitter post, Pompeo confirmed his visit to the Psagot winery, located in a settlement near Jerusalem. Reporters were not allowed to accompany him.
