Six children among 14 killed in accident in Uttar Pradesh’s Pratapgarh

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed grief over the accident and directed senior officials to reach the spot and provide all possible help to victims, a statement from the Chief Minister's Office said.

At least 14 people, including 6 children, were killed after the car in which they were travelling in collided with a stationary truck on the Lucknow-Allahabad highway in Uttar Pradesh’s Pratapgarh district, police said.

The victims were returning from a wedding in Nawabganj area of Pratapgarh, Additional Chief Secretary, Home, Awanish Awasthi said. The identities of the deceased are yet to be ascertained.

In a statement, Pratapgarh Superintendent of Police (SP) Anurag Arya said, “On November 19 around 11.45 pm, under the Manikpur police station limits on the Prayagraj-Lucknow highway, information was recived regarding an accident between an SUV and truck. After the information was received, Circle Officer (Kunda) reached the spot with police force. The police team pulled out five dead bodies from the SUV. After that, a JCB machine was used to pull the SUV from under the truck and a rescue operation was started. Nine more dead bodies were pulled out from the SUV. In the tragic accident, a total of 14 people died. There are eight men between the age of 20 and 60 years and there are six children who are between the age 7 and 15 years. All the dead bodies have been taken to Community Health Centre, Kunda where proceedings for post mortem are underway…”

On the reason for the accident, the SP said, “As per the probe till now, it seems that on the Lucknow-Prayagraj highway, there is a place called Deshraj ka Inara where the truck’s middle tire got punctured and hence it was parked on one side of the road and at the same time, the SUV came from behind and collided in the truck. Half of the SUV got stuck under the truck. Due to the collision, all 14 people in the SUV died. All the deceased belonged to Jirgapur village under the Kunda police station. They were returning from a wedding ceremony at Sheikhapur under the Nawabganj police station…”
