LUCKNOW: As cold winds continued to lash the city, minimum temperature on Monday dropped further by a degree in the city as compared to Sunday.
No significant change is expected on Tuesday but mercury is expected to rise by a couple of degrees on Wednesday and Thursday before dropping again by the weekend.
The minimum temperature was recorded at 8.6 degrees Celsius (three units below normal) during the wee hours of Monday.
It was also the lowest pre-winter season night temperature so far and second lowest in last six years in November. Earlier, on November 24, 2017, the lowest minimum temperature had dropped to 8 degrees Celsius.
Despite sunshine, the maximum temperature during the day could not rise above 25.7 degrees Celsius which was two notches below the normal. As wind speed was lower in comparison to Sunday, a thin layer of smog (mist combined with pollutants) prevailed during the day.
As conditions turned conducive for air pollution, Air Quality Index (AQI) by over 100 points from 172 (moderate) on Sunday to 283 (poor) on Monday.
State Met director JP Gupta said the winds blowing from snow-fed mountains of north India were responsible for the chill.
However, a western disturbance (WD) expected to hit the Himalayas in the next couple of days will cut off the movement of cold wind towards the state. It is also expected to cause more snowfall in the hills. Cold winds will resume thereafter.
