LUCKNOW: Pilibhit Tiger Reserve (PTR) has bagged the first international award, TX2, among the 13 tiger ranging countries for having doubled the number of tigers in less than the stipulated time.
The award not only has brought international recognition to PTR but will also promote tiger conservation in the state and the country. PTR had applied for the award in September.
TX2 is the global award which was set up in 2010 in St.
Petersburg, Russia by international organizations working for tiger conservation like WWF, UNDP, IUCN, Global Tiger Fund (GTF), CATS and The Lion's Share.
The event had participation from 13 tiger ranging countries as well, including India. As part of the declaration, participant countries had resolved to double the number of tigers across their range by 2022.
PTR, however, had achieved the target in 2018 itself, much before 2022. In 2014, All India Tiger Estimation had estimated 25 tigers in Pilibhit and 2018 estimation showed an increase by projecting 65 tigers.
Deputy director, PTR, Naveen Khandelwal, said, "We took this 2014-to-2018 time period because this was when All India Tiger Estimation was held and it gave us authentic figures."
The increase in the number could be attributed to various factors like improved and intensified patrolling, Wildlife crime control and habitat improvement besides others.
