    Cyclone Nivar: TN declares public holiday on Wednesday; Puducherry imposes Section 144 from Tuesday night

    The Chief Minister appealed to people to stay indoors and adhere to the government guidelines. Further, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to CMs of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry and assured that the Centre would provide all the necessary support to the States to tide over the situation.

    Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami on Tuesday declared a public holiday on Wednesday as Cyclone Nivar is expected to make landfall in the State on Wednesday evening.

    The Chief Minister appealed to people to stay indoors and adhere to the government guidelines. Further, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to CMs of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry and assured that the Centre would provide all the necessary support to the States to tide over the situation.

    The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has 22 on-ground teams (12 in Tamil Nadu, three in Puducherry and seven in Andhra Pradesh) have been pre-positioned at areas likely to be affected by the Cyclone. Further, eight teams are on standby.

    "Extremely heavy rainfall expected in coastal and north interior Tamil Nadu districts on Wednesday. The most vulnerable zone is north Tamil Nadu districts," said Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, DG, IMD.

    The severe cyclonic storm is expected to cross between Karaikal and Mamallapuram around Puducherry by Wednesday evening with a wind speed of 120-130 kmph gusting to 145 kmph. Rainfall is expected to continue up to Friday in Tamil Nadu, the IMD in Chennai said.

    As many as 24 train services were fully cancelled by Southern Railways owing to the onset of Cyclone Nivar while suburban train services in and around Chennai will remain cancelled from 10:00 am on Wednesday until further notice.

    The Tamil Nadu government suspended bus services in seven districts, namely Pudukottai, Nagapattinam, Tanjore, Thiruvarur, Cuddalore, Villupuram and Chengalpattu, from Tuesday afternoon until further notice.

    The Puducherry government imposed Section 144 for three days starting from 9pm on Tuesday to 6 am on Thursday as a precautionary measure.
