“Except the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it.” On Sunday, November 22, 2020, Munger Avenue Baptist Church will celebrate 126 years of existence and honor Sis. Delora Penny for 87 years of continuous service.

Munger Avenue was organized as Galilee Baptist Church in 1894 by Rev. A. H. Smith and a small number of Christian followers. The church was relocated in 1911, and the name Galilee was changed to Munger Avenue Baptist Church in 1912 with the erection of a new church building.

The church continued to thrive and grow and, in 1969, celebrated the 75th Diamond Anniversary. During that time, the church front entrance changed from Munger Avenue to Lucille Street.

In 1994 the church experienced more renovations, the 100th Centennial Celebration, and a Historical Marker was awarded to Munger by the Texas Historical Society.

Sis. Delora Penny joined the church at age ten and has remained a continuous and faithful member since 1933. She has witnessed the many different phases, renovations, accomplishments, and transitions of the church.  During her membership tenure, she participated in the following activities: the usher board, mission, the lead financial person on annual days special church events, and a Sunday School teacher.

She has been under the leadership of 6 pastors and has worked faithfully with each. Pastor W. C. Davis serves as the present Pastor.

Sis. Penny gave two important closing statements that she lives by, “In this time we need a Savior, who is God, and He said in His word, I’ll never leave you or forsake you.”

Sis. Penny is the mother of 3 children; James Jr., Sandra, Gregory, who is deceased, and nine grandchildren. Her favorite song is “God Specializes.”

The 126th Anniversary/Homecoming Family Day theme is “A Church Celebrating the Blessings of A Faithful God.” Psalm 100.
