BENGALURU: The state government on Wednesday formed a cabinet sub-committee to study the demand for higher reservation for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. Social welfare minister B Sriramulu will head the committee, which also includes senior cabinet members Govind Karjol, R Ashoka, Basavaraj Bommai and JC Madhuswamy.
The issue was discussed in the cabinet last week and chief minister BS Yediyurappa was authorised to pick the committee members.
Yediyurappa appointed Sriramulu as the panel head because he has been at the forefront of the movement that wants the ST quota to be increased from 3 per cent to 7.5 per cent.
Sriramulu has a tough job as Other Backward Classes (OBC) are concerned that any changes to the existing framework will affect their quota level. The state government has faced demands that the reservation levels for ST and SC communities should be revised based on their populations. The government had constituted the Justice Nagamohan Das Commission to look into the issue.
