A man has slammed a Yorkshire city as being 'contaminated' in an angry call to the Jeremy Vine Show.

The caller, named John, from Bridlington, hit out at Hull following the Tier announcement, claiming his area was being 'busted' by the city's high rates.

Bridlington, part of East Riding, will move into Tier 3 restrictions from Wednesday December 2 - but John said he lived closer to Tier 2 Yorkshire than to Hull, which is worst in England for Covid-19 cases.

On the show, John said: "I live in Bridlington which is two or three miles from the border of North Yorkshire.

"The area which is contaminated shall I say in East Yorkshire is the city of Hull, which is about 30 or 40 miles away.

"If I go to hospital, which I did yesterday actually and brought my wife back from hospital, the one way go to is in Scarborough which is in Tier 2.

"We could even go to York which is in Tier 2, we wouldn't go to Hull."

Jeremy Vine replied that the cases in Hull are 'crazy'.

His medical expert on the show, Dr Sarah Jarvis, added: "The cases in Hull are the highest in the country,

"It is over 500 and that is actually lower than it was, which was over 700."

Jeremy then asked John if he felt he was being "busted" by Hull.

"Yes," John replied.

"I agree with what Sarah said but if they are looking at going into hospital then we would be taken to Scarborough. I am having a hip operation and I had to go for a Covid test which was in Scarborough."

Jeremy then said: "So strangely you would be moving out of a Tier 3 to go to a Tier 2 to make that trip."

As of Friday, there have been 72 new positive coronavirus cases in Hull, totalling 10,104, with 3,890 people per 100,000 of the population having the virus.

In the East Riding, 62 new cases were confirmed, totalling 9,557, with 2,801 people per 100,000 of the population having the virus.
