NAVI MUMBAI: A puppy which was sleeping under a parked car was fatally beaten with a rod by the car owner, while a building watchman assisted him, at Takka in Panvel on Saturday. The brutal animal cruelty was also video recorded by an eyewitness. An FIR has now been lodged against the duo by the animal rights NGO People for Animals (PFA).
The PFA Unit-2 head, Vijay Rangare, told TOI: "`On Saturday, we received a video that a man had cruelly dragged a puppy and was beating it with a rod for sleeping under his car.
The watchman was also present there, watching the cruelty taking place. I reached the site in Takka, along with my team members Soutrik Kar, Rushikesh Gaikwad and local activist Srabani Mukherjee Ganguly. By then, the puppy had succumbed to his injuries. We therefore lodged an FIR at the Panvel City police station against the two men.''
The Panvel City police informed that the FIR against Narendra Thakur and the watchman Ramdoot Tiwari was lodged under the IPC sections 429 and 34 for killing an animal, along with the relevant sections of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.
"After filing the complaint, we took the dead puppy to the Panvel Animal Husbandry office to get its postmortem done.
In the meanwhile, we received several phone calls from certain influential people to take the case back. However, we firmly told them that we have lodged the FIR as per the existing laws governing animal cruelty cases,'' said Rangare.
The PFA members further added that they are thankful to Anamika Chowdhury and her team of Hands That Heal, who took the surviving siblings of the deceased puppy in her shelter; besides Sagar Savla founder of Bhumi Jeevdaya for promptly sending an ambulance along with medical professionals for the treatment of the puppy.
