Richa Chadha's Shakeela to release in theatres on Christmas

Indrajit Lankesh's Shakeela, starring Richa Chadha, will hit the theatres on Christmas this year. In the film, the actress plays the titular role of an adult star who worked primarily in South Indian film industries. Pankaj Tripathi and Rajeev Pillai will also be seen in pivotal roles. Announcing the release date, a new poster of the film was released today.
WHEN IS SHAKEELA RELEASING?
The poster features Richa Chadha in a glamorous avatar with a pair of pink glares and a gun in one hand. She is dressed in a red sari. A wall behind her features a film poster with her photo and Shakeela Box Office Queen written on it. A number of abuses in Hindi, taunting her for the colour of her skin, her weight and her faith can also be seen scribbled behind her. "This year Christmas gets hotter in cinemas," reads the new poster. The poster also reveals that Shakeela is inspired by a shocking true story.
WHO IS SHAKEELA?
Shakeela was an adult star who primarily worked in the Southern films. Born and raised in a conservative Muslim family, Shakeela opted for a career in films at only 16. She worked in more than 250 films and soon emerged as a leading adult star in the 90s and early 2000s. The actress was involved in many controversies for her bold decisions, religion and her appearance.
The film will show the struggles faced by Shakeela in the film industry. It will also lay bare how she became the face of B-grade films. At one time, she even threatened the major established superstars of the day.
WHAT DID DIRECTOR INDRAJIT LANKESH SAY ABOUT SHAKEELA?
Talking about his film, Indrajit Lankesh said in a statement, "Shakeela is my passion project. I have known her since 2003 when I worked with her. Her rags-to-riches story caught my attention. I did some extensive personal interviews with her and came to know so much about the person that she is behind that image of a star. And I knew that it is only Richa who can nail the part. This film will help youngsters who aspire to be part of the film industry understand that there is more to the overlying glitz and glamour."
