Karnataka: Priests trained for offering puja in Kannada language

JH Patel auditorium in the Chamarajanagar city of the Chamarajanagar district witnessed an unique workshop on Monday. For the first time, the district administration, endowment department and Kannada Sahitya Parishat district unit organised a workshop for over 250 priests from across the district on chanting hymns in Kannada.

MYSURU: JH Patel auditorium in the Chamarajanagar city of the Chamarajanagar district witnessed an unique workshop on Monday. For the first time, the district administration, endowment department and Kannada Sahitya Parishat district unit organised a workshop for over 250 priests from across the district on chanting hymns in Kannada.
The participants were taught about chanting the hymns used to offer prayers and puja to the deities in Kannada.
In the workshop, the priests were trained in offering puja, chanting hymns and various rituals followed in the temple in Kannada language.
Hiremagaluru Kannan, a well known orator and priest from Chikkamagalur district was the resource person.
From performing Sankalpa in the beginning of any puja to offering prayers, offering various commodities like naivedya, tambulam, archane, aarati, etc he taught Kannada hymns which can be used in the temples.
Speaking on the occasion, he stressed the importance of chanting hymns in the native languages.
This workshop is the brainchild of DC M R Ravi, 8 months ago, he proposed this workshop. However due to Covid 19, it was postponed. Speaking on the occasion, the DC stated that the idea is making the hymns simple and ensure that devotees will understand everything. "The pujas are performed for the welfare of all. If Kannada language is added with Sanskrit, the purpose of a puja will be served. Through this we want to retain the Sanskrit hymns with the touch of Kannada," he said.
Over 250 priests including Gopi, chief priest of Himavad Gopalaswamy temple and Ramakrishna, chief priest of Chamarajeshwara temple participated in this one day workshop.
