Mumbai: Actress Urmila Matondkar on Tuesday joined Shiv Sena in presence of Maharashtra CM and party chief Uddhav Thackeray. She had unsuccessfully contested the 2019 Lok Sabha polls against BJP’s Gopal Shetty from the Mumbai North constituency on a Congress ticket. She quit Congress after the polls, saying there was infighting in the party.

Addressing a news conference, she confirmed that Sena has recommended her name for a Maharashtra Legislative Council seat. “I have been told that my name has been recommended for an MLC seat. If my name is accepted, then I would like to work on issues of women and children,” she said.

Matondkar had demonstrated her oratory during her the 2019 election campaign. She had espoused secularism while joining Congress and when asked if there was a contradiction in joining the Sena, she said “being secular does not mean disliking other religions. I am a Hindu by birth and my deeds. I have done yoga since I was 8. I didn’t feel the need to speak on this so long. I have never felt the need to shout about my religion. On matters of faith, I have followed practices of my religion and would continue to do so”. She said that the Hindu philosophy emphasised on Vasudeva kuttumbakam (the world is a family).

Matondkar said Mumbai needed a party like the Sena and she looked upon Sena founder Bal Thackeray with reverence. “The government had to work in very difficult times such as natural calamities and Covid-19. It has done well. Chief minister Uddhav Thackeray has led the state well. I would like to work under his leadership,” she said.
