Liverpool should do everything in their power to retain the services of Gini Wijnaldum reckons Rio Ferdinand, who has explained why he believes the midfielder is so underrated.

The £25million signing from Newcastle United in 2016 is on the cusp of entering the final six months of his current Reds deal – at which point he would be able to negotiate a pre-contract with an overseas club – but Ferdinand, who won six Premier League titles with Liverpool’s old foes Manchester United, believes the 30-year-old is a rare commodity.

The Dutch international has been nothing short of sensational for Jurgen Klopp's side and a performer who's consistency and supreme ability are almost unmatched - even in a side as great as the one the German boss has put together.

Team Talk quote Ferdinand as hailing Wijnaldum on BT Sport, saying: “I’ve got to be honest: I love this player.

“He’s very selfless, his intelligence, he’s underrated completely because he can play every single midfield position in that central area.

“He’s plays a No.10 role for Holland, the way he defends here [for Liverpool].

“We do get players who you play with in your career who fans probably don’t appreciate as much.

“Because on the pitch you know how much work they’re getting through, how valuable they are.”
