PMK protest: Chennai police book Anbumani Ramadoss and others

CHENNAI: The Triplicane police in Chennai registered a case against PMK leaders Anbumani Ramadoss, G K Mani and A K Murthy and several party workers for staging a protest here on Tuesday without permission.
The PMK staged the protest demanding 20% reservation for vanniyars in state government jobs and higher education.
The police booked them under sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 188 (an order promulgated by a public servant lawfully empowered to promulgate such order, directing that a religious procession shall not pass down a certain street) and 341 (wrongful restraint), 269 (whoever unlawfully or negligently does any act which is, and which he knows or has reason to believe to be, likely to spread the infection of any disease dangerous to life) of the IPC and Section 3 The Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897.

The first information report stated that at least 848 PMK workers, including Vanniyar Sangam leader Arulmozhi and PMK functionaries Vanniyaperumal, Kesavan and Ramesh, were arrested and later released on bail. It also stated that Anbumani, Mani and Murthy ‘absconded’.
The PMK workers staged a day protest at Valluvar Kottam on Wednesday too. Mani said, “We would stage our protests in other parts of the city on Thursday and Friday. We will discuss with our party president, S Ramadoss, our next course of action.”
