446 students to get degrees in IIT Bhubaneswar convocation

BHUBANESWAR: In view of the Covid-19 pandemic, IIT Bhubaneswar will hold its 9th annual convocation on Friday in a hybrid mode where students participate with physical presence or by online. Union education minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank will grace the occasion via online as chief guest and address the convocation.
As many as 446 students including 35 PhD scholars will get their degree on the occasion. RV Raja Kumar, director of the institute, told media here on Wednesday that the institute will confer degrees to 35 PhD scholars, 141 M Tech, 70 MSc and 200 BTech students.

The national institute has evolved an innovative method of holding the convocation in real or live form with the participation of the degree recipients and degree awarding taking place, either through physical or online presence of a student. The whole ceremony will go live.
The Union minister will inaugurate the Student Activity Center (SAC), Play Courts and the building of the School of Humanities, Social Sciences and Management, of the institute. The SAC and the play courts are a major part of the grand 42 acre Sports Complex the institute is creating under phase-II infrastructure with the support of the ministry of education.
Raja Kumar said the President of India Gold Medal will be awarded to Aditya Pal, of the computer science and engineering for best academic performance among the entire outgoing BTech batch of students.
The Director’s Gold Medal will be awarded to Sanket Dey Chowdhury of the School of Infrastructure for the best academic performance among the entire outgoing MTech batch of students. The Director’s Gold Medal will also be awarded to Souvick Chakraborty of the Physics, School of Basic Sciences, for the best academic performance among the entire outgoing MSc batch of students.

For the best academic performance in the respective schools, the Institute Silver Medals will be awarded to meritorious students of B Tech, M Tech and MSc students. Chairman, board of governors of the institute, will award the degrees to the successful students and address the audience.
The institute has 2490 students, 332 PhD scholars and 143 full-time faculty members. It offers B Tech, M Tech, dual degree (B Tech + M Tech) and M Sc programs respectively. It has seven academic schools at the permanent campus at Argul in Khurda district.
