If there’s one name in British culture you need to know, it’s Irene Agbontaen.

When the Brixton-native isn’t chatting to the likes of Jodie Turner-Smith and Grace Ladoja MBE for her podcast, TTYA Talks (both of these episodes make for particularly good listening, FYI), she can be found heading up her inclusive fashion brand TTYA, which she founded in 2013.

TTYA’S brand DNA is loud and bold and proud, with Agbontaen crafting form-fitting, fashion-forward pieces that are specifically designed for women who are 5”9 and over. With endorsements from Beyoncé and Jourdan Dunn under her belt, last year Agbontaen debuted her first TTYA collection at Fashion Week in Lagos, a monumental moment for the Nigerian-British designer.

As a native Londoner and a small business owner herself, it seemed only natural that we check in with Agbontaen to find out how she’ll be spending Christmas and more about the independent brands she’ll be supporting this year.

Which part of London do you call home?

“Brixton, South London is home for me. It’s one of London’s most diverse and exciting neighbourhoods -the epicentre of culture!”

What are your go-to independent business in your neighbourhood?

“Eats of Eden, in Brixton Village is my go to for fresh organic vegan food inspired by Caribbean Ital recipes. The pumpkin and sweet potato curry is a must try.  The Old Post Office Bakery, is London's oldest artisan bakery. They produce delicious baked goods that are affordable, simple and fresh, from organic bread, pasties, pastries and cakes. They are also really invested in the community with a percentage of proceeds going towards various community projects and charity endeavours. And finally Andre Pierre, a Black-owned hair salon in the heart of Brixton.”

What does Christmas 2020 look like for you?

“It’s going to be different. I usually travel home to Lagos, Nigeria for Christmas but will be spending it in London this year. One thing I am super grateful for is my family’s good health so I will be enjoying Christmas with them.”

What is on your Christmas wish list this year?

“On my list are just home essentials - like so many people, I’ve really enjoyed being home and cooking during lockdown. I’m obsessed with air fryers!”

Which independent brands from Shop London will you be buying from this winter?

“I’m obsessed with Kai Collective and its founder Fisayo! It's definitely going to be my go-to for my Christmas LEWK!”

What’s the best Christmas gift you’ve ever given or received?

“Probably a hand made bracelet from my 10 year old Nephew. He really invested his time into making something special for me. It's my little charm to take with me when I travel!”

What’s your failsafe Christmas gift idea?

"Gift vouchers - you can’t go wrong! So many local and small businesses are doing gift vouchers over the Christmas period that I will definitely be investing in these by showing my support and shopping small. I love Sage Flowers, it’s run by Iona and Romy, who also run amazing floral workshops based in Peckham, South London. I urge you to check them out.

Brixton village is within walking distance. It houses over 100 independent traders: a mix of boutiques, fruit and veg, meat, fish, and masses of international food shops. It’s such an exciting place to visit and has great energy, so will head there for some ideas too. "

How do you treat yourself?

“Self-care Sunday! A great hair mask, I use the Hit Masks Cantu Shea butter conditioner which you can get from Candour Beauty, a face Mask and Netflix!  I’m currently watching The Crown. Princess Margaret is my favourite!”

What has this year taught you?

“Not to take time, family and friends for granted. With our lives moving at such a fast pace I’ve been grateful for the opportunity to slow down and really appreciate  and value what I have. ”

What are your new year’s resolutions?

“To live and enjoy the NOW - time is not promised.”
