Brits are braced for more snow over the weekend after being plunged into icy chaos today - but is your area affected?

The end of the working week has seen flooding, frost, freezing wind and thick snow blast the country - and there could be more to come this weekend.

A Met Office yellow severe weather warning for snow expires at midnight today, but there are others in place for rain and ice which run until 6am and 10am tomorrow, respectively.

Dan Harris, the Met Office's deputy chief meteorologist, said: "It will stay cold into the weekend with rain, showers and hill snow continuing across many areas, along with overnight frosts.

"We could also see some stubborn areas of freezing fog develop more widely, which at this time of year can persist all day.

"However, it's not all doom and gloom as there's likely to be an increased chance of dry, bright and perhaps even sunny weather on offer as the weekend progresses."

Today and tomorrow's weather warnings

Britain will wake to fresh blankets of snow and treacherous ice tomorrow as a freezing weather front continues to blast the UK.

Snow is expected for Saturday in Cumbria and the Pennines in England, and also Scotland, with land over 400-metres seeing up to 10cm.

The Met Office's Alex Burkill said warned: "That's a significant amount of snow especially this early in December.

"The snowiest months are usually a bit later into winter, January and February and also it's very early in December at the moment."

Mr Burkill added that the late night Friday conditions could "quite easily make it the coldest night of the year so far".

The Met Office described that "persistent rain, heavy at times, may lead to some travel disruption" in the north-east of Scotland, including Inverness, Aberdeen, Perth and Edinburgh.

Meanwhile the West Country-based forecaster warned "icy patches are expected to form overnight" from Friday and could cause "some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces".

The areas worst affected by the ice in the south-east include London, Essex, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire.

However going forward to next week it was "not all doom and gloom", as experts forecasted brighter weather and even some sunshine.

Temperatures going into next week may be lower than the average annual temperature, which is usually about 7C (44.6F) to 9C (48.2F).

Bookmaker Coral now makes its odds-on at 4-5 that this month ends as the coldest December on record in the UK.

The firm goes 4-9 that we will have a White Christmas this year in any major city of the UK.

Aberdeen and Glasgow have the shortest odds at 3-1 of any city in the UK to see snow, Manchester is in the betting at 4-1, while London is 5-1.

"With temperatures plummeting fast and snow already falling in some parts of the UK, this month is now odds-on to be the coldest December on record," said Coral's John Hill.

"It looks as though this year is our best chance for a long time to have a White Christmas. We expect to see the white stuff fall somewhere in the UK on Christmas Day, with Aberdeen and Glasgow the most likely cities."
