CROSSLAKE — A 24-year-old Crosslake man died Friday, Dec. 4, after launching a reportedly stolen truck over a berm and traveling 200 feet down an embankment before breaking through the ice on Cross Lake.
The Crosslake Police Department reported its initial investigation indicated the driver was traveling at a high speed and went through the T-intersection at Daggett Pine Road and County Highway 66 before entering the lake. The man’s name was withheld Friday night pending notification of relatives.
Crosslake police received a call of a truck in the water at noon Friday. The caller, who Crosslake Police Chief Erik Lee said attempted to use a kayak to reach the vehicle, believed the truck was occupied. When police arrived at 12:03 p.m., they found the truck completely submerged, a news release stated. The vehicle was reported stolen just minutes before the crash from a residence on Daggett Pine Road, police said.

Crosslake Fire Department personnel extricated the man from the vehicle at 12:23 p.m. Fire and North Memorial Health ambulance personnel performed lifesaving efforts but were unsuccessful. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The man’s body was transported to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.
The Breezy Point Police Department, Crow Wing County Sheriff's Office and Minnesota Department of Natural Resources assisted at the scene.
