LUCKNOW: A senior clerk employed in the zila Panchayat office in Kannauj was caught red-handed by Vigilance establishment for demanding and accepting a bribe Rs 31,500 from a contractor on Saturday.
The clerk identified as-Bechelal had allegedly demanded the amount from a contractor who had constructed a road recently.
Additional Superintendent of police, Vigilance, Kanpur unit, Hardayal Singh told TOI that a complaint was received at the headquarters from Kannauj-based contractor that a senior clerk was asking for money for passing a bill on expenditures made to build a road.

Following which a team from Kanpur vigilance unit was asked to get in touch with the contractor and attend the grievance of the complainant.
The team asked the complainant to remain in touch with the senior clerk and inform them when he reached to accept the bribe. On Saturday, the clerk had called the complainant to meet him in the office.
Complainant had passed on the information to Vigilance team and the sleuths nabbed red-handed accepting a bribe of Rs 31,500.
“On the basis of the catch an FIR was registered against Pandey under the charges of prevention of corruption act 2018,” said Singh.
Vigilance establishment has launched a dedicated ‘anti-bribery helpline’ in the month of June. The move has been taken to make the state administration corruption free. The helpline number-9454401866 will be available from 10 am to 6 pm for giving information about corruption while the complainant’s name is kept secret.
