Commemorative stamp released marking the day Bangladesh got its name
Post and Telecommunication Minister Mustafa Jabbar today announced the release of commemorative stamps and envelopes, and inaugurated the data cards marking the day of naming East Pakistan as Bangladesh.
"On this historic day in 1969, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman announced the name of then East Pakistan as Bangladesh," Jabbar said on the occasion at his office in the city, according to a press release.
To mark the day, the General Post Office (GPO) has issued a commemorative stamp of Tk 10, a Tk 10 envelope and a data card worth Tk 5. A special seal was used on this occasion.
During the release, the minister said, "Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, a young member of the Constituent Assembly of Pakistan, had given a speech in Karachi in 1957, protesting against the name 'East Pakistan', saying that there was a history and tradition [in what was] called East Bengal.
"He further said if it had to be renamed East Pakistan, public opinion in Bengal had to also be taken," he added.
The minister said that it was Bangabandhu who bravely opposed naming Bangladesh as 'East Pakistan' and named the country Bangladesh.
The Philatelic Bureau of Dhaka GPO will sell the stamps, envelopes and data cards from today. Later, it will be sold at all GPOs and post offices in the country.
