Udupi MLA K Raghupathy Bhat discussed the possibilities of setting up a government
medical college in Udupi at the government assurances committee meeting in Bengaluru on Thursday.
Bhat, who heads the committee said
Udupi district from where he is an elected representative from, has only one private medical college and there is demand for a
government medical college from the various stakeholders concerned.
Chairing the meeting on pending assurances pertaining to the medical education department, Bhat drew attention of the officials concerned to the proposal to start a government medical college in his home district.
The government has already sanctioned a proposal to upgrade the district hospital in Udupi to a 250-bedded facility. A 20-acre plot of land has been identified in a 10-km radius of this district hospital to set up the government medical college.
Bhat also discussed the idea of starting a nursing college in the building abutting the district hospital with Shivanand Kapashi, registrar, Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences on this occasion. T K Anil Kumar, principal secretary, medical education department, M Shilpa, joint secretary, department of medical education, Dr Ramalingappa Antartani, director, KIMS, Hubballi, Dr Shivakumar C R, director, BIMS, Bidar and others were present.
