ALAPPUZHA: The works on Alappuzha bypass is in the final stage and it is expected to be opened for traffic in January. Public works minister G Sudhakaran and Alappuza MP A M Ariff have reviewed the progress of the bypass project.
The minister said as per the policy of the Union government, the bypass will be a toll road. “The state government has spent Rs 176 crore for the bypass.
So, the state government has requested the Centre to reduce the toll rate in proportion to the amount spent by the state,” the minister said.
As the Prime Minister has informed the state government his desire to inaugurate the project, the state government is waiting for the PM’s date to announce the inauguration of the project.
As many as 420 street lights will be set up on the 6.8km-long Alappuzha bypass road.
He also said the Kundannoor and Vyttila flyovers will be opened in January.
Earlier, though the construction works on the bypass reached last phase, the project met roadblock due to delay in getting permission from railways to install girders as part of the construction of two ROBs at Malikamukku and Kuthirapanthy. Later, the railways gave permission after a long wait.
The total cost of the bypass work is equally shared by the state and Union governments. Of the 6.8km stretch of the bypass, 3.2km is elevated highway on beach side.
