BHUBANESWAR: Cold wave conditions continued to prevail at several parts of the state on Wednesday with Angul witnessing the sharpest drop in temperatures across the state. Even though Phulbani, at 4° Celsius, continued to be the coldest place in the state, it is Angul which made news, after the mercury plummeted eight degrees to stand at 5.6° Celsius on the day as cold swept through the district.
The IMD report said 12 major towns or cities in the state recorded temperature below 10°C.
The state capital recorded 12.4°C, three degree below the normal.
The IMD's latest forecast said similar condition would continue for three more days.
There were reports of frost at some of the interior pockets of Kandhamal district even as temperature at Phulbani was four degrees below normal. Cold wave condition was felt at Jharsuguda, Sundargarh and Koraput as well amid fall in night temperature all over the state.
The such sharp fall in minimum temperature affected normal lives at many places, forcing people to remain indoors or huddle close to a fire for warmth.
Senior meteorologist Umashankar Das of the regional IMD centre said conditions continue to favour a drop in minimum temperature across the state. He said coastal pockets saw an average drop of three to four degree celsius while it was more in some of the interior pockets.

A senior meteorologist said the fall in minimum temperature by 4.6 to 6.4°C compared to normal is generally treated as cold wave and if it falls further, it is considered severe cold wave condition.
The IMD predicted that on Thursday cold wave is likely to prevail over Angul, Dhenkanal, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Koraput, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Nuapada, Bargarh, Nabarangpur, and Mayurbhanj.
Given the cold wave, the IMD advised people to remain indoors and avoid exposure to cold.
The state government, in the wake of the IMD’s warning, has kept the distrct collectors and municipal commissioners on alert and advised them to take needful steps to avoid any trouble in their jurisdiction.
