NEW DELHI: Erratic supply of material due to the ongoing protests at Ghazipur border has impacted the redevelopment of Shahdara Jheel.
The redevelopment project included creating a lake and a recreation site, and was slated to be named after former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The already delayed project, due to a hold up in allocation of funds and the Covid pandemic, was supposed to be inaugurated on December 25 but so far only 80% of work has been completed.
An EDMC official said: “Around 80% of the work has been completed.
We are expecting to open the site by January 26, a month after the targeted deadline. We would have completed the work on time but due to the farmers protest and the subsequent sealing of borders, supply of material got interrupted.”
The redevelopment project is funded by the Centre under its AMRUT (Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation) scheme, and includes 30.7-acres of green space, of which 14 acres is occupied by the lake. “Once developed, this will be the first picnic spot in east Delhi with provisions for boating, eateries, huge lawns, walking tracks, etc. Work on creating park, and walkways are currently going on at the site,” the official added.
The project was originally conceived in 2008. “In 2012, EDMC had prepared a plan for the lake’s revival in two phases. But the required funding could not be assembled and the project was shelved again. Finally in July 2019, the central government decided to allocate Rs 15 crore for the lake’s revival and the civic body went on with the redevelopment project,” the EDMC official said.
