Karnataka: Two killed in separate accidents in Udupi district

UDUPI: The driver of a vegetable laden lorry died and a co-passenger sustained injuries when he lost control of the vehicle and it fell into a roadside ditch at Maala Ghat section under Karkala Rural PS limits in the wee hours of Saturday.
Police identified the victim as Annappa, 56, resident of Chikkamagaluru and the person injured as Ravi, working as cleaner. The incident took place around 2am when apparently the brakes failed.
The lorry was on its way to Karkala from Chikkamagaluru.
Annappa sensing the danger urged Ravi to jump from the vehicle, police said. Locals from Kadari area near Maala helped the police retrieve the body of Annappa from the ill-fated lorry. A crane had to be summoned to lift the lorry from the ditch. Ravi has been admitted to government hospital at Karkala for treatment. A case has been registered in Karkala rural police station.
Motorist killed
Isaac, 48, resident of Hoodi died when a lorry transporting fish from fisheries harbour at Malpe collided against the scooter that he was driving on the Vadabhandeshwara-Thottam road in the early hours of Saturday. The lorry subsequently also rammed into a micro van parked on the road side in front of the guest house causing extensive damage to it. Although the lorry driver panicked and fled the scene, police tracked him and the lorry down and seized it. A case has been registered in Malpe police station.

Murder
A family discord between son-in-law and father-in-law resulted in the death of the latter when Tausif, the former allegedly slapped the 57-year-old Sheik Abubakkar, pushed him down to the floor and kicked his private parts. The incident took place at a flat in Hanchikatte in Karkala Kasba village of Karkala taluk under Karkala town PS limits on December 31. A grievously injured Abubakkar was admitted to a private nursing home in Karkala.
When his condition worsened, doctors at City Nursing Home suggested that he be shifted to Kasturba Hospital in Manipal for advanced treatment late on Friday. However, doctors in Manipal declared him dead on arrival. Police have registered a case under section 302 of IPC (murder) against Tausif on a complaint from Hasanabba. The victim apparently suffered head injuries when pushed to the floor and also for the blow to his private parts.
Suicide
Venkatesh Yadrami, 28, who worked as a lecturer in a private college in Moodbidri and had lost the job during the lockdown, ended his life by hanging himself to a ceiling fan with a veil in their rented house in Badagudde under Hebri police station limits on Friday. Venkatesh resided in the house with his wife, a lecturer in a private college in Hebri, in a death note to her, had cited his unemployment as the reason for this drastic step.
Rescued
Personnel of fire and emergency services rescued a student who had locked himself inside the bathroom of their residential flat on MIT campus on Saturday. Irked by his mother scolding him for playing games on the cell phone and taking the phone away, the student locked himself in overnight. When no amount of cajoling saw him come out, the mother called the fire and emergency services, who accessed the bathroom from the terrace of the flat.
