THANJAVUR: Three people were killed after the bike they were riding was hit by a sugarcane-laden tractor-trailer truck near Thiruvaiyaru in Thanjavur district on Saturday noon.
Police identified the deceased as S Manikandan, 32, a lab technician, P Akilesh, 12, a resident of East Punavasal and J Sakkubhai, 70, a native of Melavattam near Thiruvaiyaru.
The fourth traveller has been identified as P Bharaneesh, 10, younger brother of Akilesh, who escaped with injuries.
All four were relatives.
They were heading towards Thanjavur from Thiruvaiyaru on a motorbike. While they were approaching Arasur, a tractor attached with two trailer trucks loaded with sugarcane was ahead of the two-wheeler.
When Manikandan tried to overtake the tractor, the truck drove across a cable wire that was tied across the road. One end of the cable was stuck to the sugarcane load trailer truck and the other end latched onto the two-wheeler riders.
As the tractor kept moving, the cable pulled the two-wheeler and Manikandan lost control over the vehicle. All three fell under the wheels of the second trailer truck, leaving Manikandan, Sakkubhai and Akilesh dead on the spot.

However, Bharaneesh, who fell on the other side of the road, escaped with injuries.
On information, Thiruvaiyaru deputy superintendent of police Chithravel and Nadukavery police rushed to the spot and sent the bodies to Thiruvaiyaru government hospital for a post mortem.
Bharaneesh was admitted for treatment.
Nadukavery police registered a case and further inquiries were on.
