Bihar police SI owns property worth Rs 40 lakh, booked in DA case in Purnia

PATNA: A sub-inspector rank officer of Bihar police posted in Purnia has been allegedly found to be owner of movable and immovable properties worth around of at least Rs 40 lakh which he has amassed within short tenure of mere 11 years of service.
Following the unearthing of the property in the name of the officer named Madan Kumar, a case of disproportionate asset was registered against him with Khajanchi Hat police station in Purnia on Friday.
Police sources said Madan is a 2009 batch SI and hails from Naugachhia in Bhagalpur.
They said Madan came under former Purnia IG Ratan Sanjay Katiyar’s radar after it surfaced that while holding the police of Maranga police outpost in-charge, the SI had turned an incident of house dacoity into a simple theft case.
Soon after, the SI was placed under suspension in mid-November after his act.
Police sources said that the case, which is first of its kind against any SI of state police till now, was lodged on direction of Katiyar which he gave hardly some hours before handing over the charge to newly appointed IG.
Katiyar got transferred on the post of IG (modernisation) in Patna just a day before the FIR got registered.
Police sources said that this Katiyar’s action has set a new trend as DA cases were either registered by vigilance investigation bureau or special vigilance unit of state government with their exclusive police stations in Patna.
Sources said that at FIR stage, total property amassed by him stands at around Rs 40 lakh which includes a 3-BHK flat worth around Rs 23 lakh in Purnia registered on his name.
“They also found jewellery worth around of Rs 11 lakh owned by him. Besides, in the income-tax return of last fiscal year, Madan had not provided details of two bank account held by him,” a senior police officer said preferring anonymity.
When asked, Khajanchi Hat police station SHO Sunil Kumar Mandal confirmed on Saturday that a DA case has been registered against the SI.
“The case has been lodged by additional SP Bambam Chaudhary posted in Purnia IG office. Another additional SP rank officer named Hari Mohan Shukla has been made investigating officer of the case,” he added.
