LUCKNOW: Just a day after a realtor was shot in his head in broad daylight in the state capital, a history-sheeter of Mau district was sprayed with bullets as 30 rounds were fired near Kathauta crossing in the posh Gomtinagar area late on Wednesday evening.
The deceased was identified as Ajeet Singh (35) alias Ajeet Langda of Mau, a history-sheeter who had been externed from his native district and was living in trans-Gomti area of the city.
His associate Mohar Singh was also injured in the attack while a delivery man of a food chain also sustained a bullet injury.
Lucknow police commissioner, DK Thakur, who rushed to the spot soon after the murder, said the incident took place between 8.30pm and 8.45pm. “There were three assailants on a motorcycle. The exact number of rounds of fire is yet to be established but it is believed that the assailants fired 25-30 rounds and used prohibited bore of pistols. The police team has recovered 9mm and also .32 bore cartridges from the crime scene. It seems Ajeet and his aide were attacked by their friend-turned foes over some dispute,” Thakur said. The three assailants opened fire on Ajeet and his companion Mohar at Kathauta crossing in Vibhuti Khand, while they were in an SUV.
Akash, a delivery boy working with a food chain, was also injured as he was passing from the crossing.
Police commissioner Thakur said the deceased Ajeet was named accused in as many as 19 cases and had been externed for six months from Mau on December 31 by the district administration.
“Ajeet was an accused in five murder cases," he added.
“We are trying to find details about his enmity or rivalry with anyone in Mau and neighbouring districts. A team has been formed to crack the case. Ajeet’s aide Mohar Singh is out of danger and our team is quizzing him,” he said.
Police teams are scanning CCTV footage to gather clues about the assailants, the route taken by them and sequence of events before the murder.
Police sources said Ajeet was a witness in the trial of former MLA Sarvesh Singh Sippu’s murder in Azamgarh, the hearing of which is going to commence soon. Police said Ajeet’s wife Ranu Singh was gram pradhan in Mau from 2010-2015. Sources also revealed the murder was likely to be the handiwork of Mukhtar Ansari gang, since Ajeet had become a liability now.
