GHAZIABAD/LUCKNOW: Chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday decided to hand over the Muradnagar roof collapse case to a special investigation team (SIT) of the Economic Offences Wing (EOW).
Additional chief secretary (information) Navneet Sehgal said the decision to involve the EOW had been taken in the wake of allegations that the contractor who built the shelter had connived with a few officials of the Muradnagar municipality to inflate the project cost.

“The special team has been appointed to look into any lapses which led to the roof collapse,” Sehgal said.
Meanwhile, the threemember panel formed by Ghaziabad district magistrate Ajay Shankar Pandey has apparently found that not only was poor quality material used to build the shelter, the design, too, was flawed. The panel will submit its final report on Thursday.
“The team carried out an inspection of the site and the debris. Prima facie, it appears there was a fault in the design. An examination of the debris also revealed that substandard material had been used to build the shelter,” said Chandra Lal, the project director of the Uttar Pradesh Rajkiya Nirman Nigam and one of the three members of the panel.
Asked to specify, Lal explained, “The columns supporting the ceiling were undersized and there was also no beam to hold the columns. The samples of the debris have been sent for testing and a detailed report will be submitted to the DM on Thursday.”
Meanwhile, in Muradnagar, Union minister and Ghaziabad MP Gen VK Singh (retd) visited the families of the deceased and distributed cheques of Rs 10 lakh to each of them. However, a few young members of the families confronted Singh and demanded government jobs and houses.
