Uttar Pradesh: Ballia woman alleges talaq over phone, harassment by in-laws

VARANASI: A 25-year-old woman approached the Ballia SP office on Friday seeking justice in a matter of ‘triple talaq’ and harassment by her in-laws. The local police has been asked into the matter.
The woman, a resident of Sikariyakala village in Gadwar police station area of Ballia district, went to the SP office with her two-year-old daughter. She alleged that her husband, who lives in Qatar, had given her ‘triple talaq’ over the phone in July 2020.

She was married to Kutubuddin Usmani, a resident of Firozpur village in Mau district, in 2018. After three months of marriage, Kutubuddin went to Qatar. She alleged that later her in-laws started harassing her, and one of the relatives even tried to abuse her sexually.
When she informed her husband about the events, he pronounced ‘triple talaq’ over the phone, she said adding that currently she was living with her parents. She further alleged that after failing to get any response from the local police she approached the office of Ballia SP demanding justice.
Ballia ASP Sanjay Kumar said, “The woman made a complaint that she was being harassed by her in-laws. The SO of Mahila thana has been instructed to look into the matter and take appropriate action.”
