COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore police on Friday night arrested a notorious motorcycle thief and recovered five stolen two-wheelers from him.
The arrested man has been identified as A Asiq Ahmed, 28, of Ashoka Street in Selvapuram. Police said the man was facing more than 20 motorcycle theft and robbery cases. Two years ago, he had attempted to murder a police sub-inspector at Palani in Dindigul district, the police said.

Race Course (crime) police inspector Sujatha said Asiq Ahmed was residing with his second wife at Valparai in Coimbatore district. He returned to Coimbatore city three months ago. “Asiq and his two accomplices had stolen around 15 motorcycles from various places in the city in the last three months. His accomplices are absconding,” said Sujatha.
Asiq was involved in a series of motorcycle thefts in Race Course, Saibaba Colony, Ramanathapuram, Kattoor and Madukkarai police limits.
“Many motorcycles were stolen from various places of the city in the last three months. We collected footage of the bike thieves. After stealing the motorcycles, they immediately changed the registration number plates. They borrowed money by pledging the motorcycles,” said Sujatha.
In June 2018, Asiq was involved in a highway robbery in the KG Chavadi police station limit in Coimbatore district. A police special team nabbed him from Palani. He assaulted police sub-inspector Arumuga Nainar. He was booked for attempting to murder the police sub-inspector.
Most of the cases against him are being tried in judicial magistrate courts and sessions courts in Coimbatore and Palani.
