GHAZIABAD: Three people were arrested for running a call centre and allegedly duping people on the pretext of giving them jobs abroad. Police have recovered 15 ATM cards, six mobile phones, along with three SIM cards, two cheques and some electronic items from the trio.
It was also found that transactions worth over Rs 50 lakh had been made by the accused in the past one year.
The accused have been identified as Amit Pal and Abhishek Mehto, both from Muradnagar in Ghaziabad, and Arvind Kumar, a resident of Sihani Gate area.
Amit used to purchase data and details of people through various sources, including agents of mobile SIM companies and websites. Abhishek used to make calls to people and he would speak to hundreds of people in a day, police said.
The incident came to light after Ghaziabad SSP Kalanidhi Naithani got an email on May 12 last year from a city resident who reported a fraud of Rs 13 lakhs. The SSP then transferred the case to the cyber cell.
Abhay Mishra, circle officer 1, said the trio would target those who have uploaded their resume online. They would call the aspirants with job offers, and according to the police, the trio would take more than Rs 10 lakh from a person for an engineering job in Europe. They would charge Rs 5 lakh from each aspirant for Group-C post in gulf countries.
“The accused have said they have duped over 150 people since 2019,” Mishra said.
The trio would take Rs 50,000 as token money and stage a telephone interview. They would book flight tickets for the aspirants but a day before the departure date, they would cancel the ticket and switch off their phones.
They have been sent to judicial custody.
