Singhu Border: Age no bar, women show support with kirtan stir

NEW DELHI: While the main stage at the Singhu border was the centre of attention on Sunday, a group of nearly 40 women just a few metres away were also catching eyeballs for serenading locals. Accompanied by musical instruments, singing kirtans, the women had arrived from Delhi to show their support to the farmers' cause.
The head of the group, Harjinder Kaur Chadha (67), said that the women had been observing the agitation for over a month now and wanted to take part in it after seeing it grow."People are coming here all the way from parts of Punjab and Haryana. We live much closer to the protest, this is th least we could do," said Chadha, who is also the pradhan at her local gurdwara in Patel Nagar.
The spry 67-year-old said that they had arranged funds for a bus that picked up the women from different parts of the city. Some as old as 70 years, the women came from all parts of the capital like Rohini, Patel Nagar and Karol Bagh. The musical instruments were borrowed from local gurdwaras. "This is the first time these women are at the border. We may start coming here more often," said Chadha.
Kamlesh Duppar, a housewife who came from Rohini's Sector 16, said she had seen pictures of the protest site, but the actual scale of the number of demonstrators was unmatched. "There are lakhs and lakhs of people here and I am glad to be one of them. Almost every women who came with us is a homemaker who seized the opportunity to show farmers their support," said Duppar.
Meanwhile, Lakhbir Kaur (68) from Karol Bagh is asking more people to join in the protests. "People much older than me are here. Why can't I do the same?" she asked as she sang along to the same near the stage. "As each day passes, the support here seems to only be growing stronger," added Kaur.
