NEW DELHI: A 45-year-old peon at a government office was arrested from south Delhi’s Ghitorni, on Sunday for allegedly sexually assaulting a widow for the past one year. The woman told police that the accused, Sanjay Singh, had promised marriage and said he was a divorcee.
Singh lived with his wife and two children in Ghitorni and was known to the woman’s husband, who died in 2015.
In her complaint on Saturday, the victim told the cops that Singh started to contact and visit her after her husband’s death.
“The woman said Singh got physical with her for the first time in 2019 and sexually assaulted her in his car. He told her that he was a divorcee and wants to marry her. The accused started visiting her house regularly and asked her not to disclose their relationship to anyone,” police said.
However, recently, the woman came to know that Singh was married. When she confronted him, he threatened her not to report the matter to police.
DCP (South) Atul Thakur said Singh was booked under IPC Section 376 for rape and under other sections. “Singh confessed to have deceived the woman and made physical relation on pretext of marriage,” he added.
(The victim's identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme court directives on cases related to sexual assault)
