Soldier pleads for God’s mercy on Covid-19

Legendary musician Lucius ‘Soldier’ Banda has gone down on his knees pleading for mercy from God on the devastation that the global Covid-19 continues to inflict on humanity.

The singer has opened up his heart on the disease in his new single Mutimvere released over the weekend. The composition is a prayer as he converses with the Creator, asking him to intervene on the current plight that humanity is facing.

Banda: I should have done a tribute for her

While addressing the song to God and pleading for His intervention, ‘Soldier’ has also called on people to be responsible by adopting good health habits to ensure that they are safe from the disease.

Done in a laid-back style, the composer and singer  also alluded to the hope that Malawians had at the turn of the year 2020 only to have their hopes dashed because of the pandemic. He further wonders as God promised never to destroy humanity with such calamities anymore.

Tidali ndimalingaliro akuluakulu polowa 2020, timkati ndichaka cha mayankho. Nayo mvula kugwa bwino, anthu ambiri adalima, osadziwa satana wakonza chiwembu. Miyandamiyanda yapita, kumanda zachisoni, kuyikidwa mopanda ulemu…Lucius sings in the first stanza of the song.

In an interview, Banda said he composed the song last year, but delayed its release when the pandemic appeared to ease up towards the end of the year. He said he has been compelled to release the song following the death of veteran radio broadcaster and artist Maria Chidzanja Nkhoma.

“Maybe I should have done a tribute for her thinking of how she has lived. She was born before some of us were born. She was an idol to our parents. Personally my mother used to love her so much. And every time I met her, I told her she reminded me of my mother. She was also Maria,” he said.

The artist said to think of all that Maria survived during her lifetime only to succumb to Covid-19 and not receiving a proper send-off is a painful thing to accept.

The song was produced and recorded by Ralph Ching’amba at his Pro Studios in Lilongwe.
