A debatable debate

Dear ER:

Redondo Beach’s ability to face economic recovery in the years ahead will depend decidedly on the March election for Mayor and Council Members. There is a fine group of well-qualified candidates who want to bring progress and collaborative leadership to Redondo Beach: Chris Voisey for Mayor; Brad Waller for District 1; Paul Moses or Erika Snow Robinson for District 2; John Gran for District 4 and Mike Webb for City Attorney. These candidates have the talent and vision our City needs. Redondo residents need to hear from them. A forum sponsored by the highly biased Rescue Our Waterfront political action committee that is supporting its own slate of candidates with very negative campaigns, is not what the City residents need right now. We have the opportunity to change the tone of our politics in Redondo Beach and focus on moving forward positively and with civility. The City or other neutral organizations should invite the League of Women’s Voters to run a candidate forum as has been done in the past. The League of Women Voters has a track record of hosting fair, unbiased debates with the purpose and intent only to educate and inform voters.

Four more years

Dear ER:

For decades, Bill Brand has led successful efforts to keep Redondo Beach out of the hands of developers, who see our city as a product to be exploited, not as a community of individuals, families, children, elders, surfers, sailors and beachcombers. Without his leadership, first as councilman, then mayor, Redondo Beach would be another Marina del Rey with thousands of condos lined up west of Pacific Coast Highway. Through these years, Mayor Brand has fought to maintain our quality of life and clean environment against those who promote overdevelopment for the sake of profit or personal gain. In addition, he has been resolute in his commitment to insure the city maintains its beach town culture. As residents of Redondo Beach we have been fortunate to have a leader with  Bill’s vision, integrity, and dedication to public service. This is why I enthusiastically support Bill Brand for another four years as Mayor of Redondo Beach.

North South divide

Dear ER:

The lead of this story should read, North Redondo takes lead in housing homeless (Redondo takes lead in housing homeless,” ER Jan. 7, 2020). The current leadership in South Redondo effectively cut the duration of this temporary program in half. The current leadership in South Redondo has taken away this option for those experiencing homelessness, forcing them onto the street. They will no longer have restrooms and refuge. At that point, Redondo will have few options but to allow homeless to camp at the Civic Center or on City owned property. We can do better Redondo. Vote for Paul Moses for City Council on March 2.

No worries

Dear ER:

The Los Angeles County Health Department came in and shut down the bar I work at in Manhattan beach on Friday (“Manhattan Beach closes outdoor dining,” ER Jan. 7, 2020). How are we supposed to support local businesses when they are shutting us down? If people were worried, they would stay at home. It’s time to open everything up and stop hurting businesses.

Not alt-right

Dear ER:

I agree with every quote in the article. Shame on those Republicans who refuse to stand against hate (“Beached party: Beach Cities Republicans numbers tumble over Trump,” ER Dec. 24, 2020). To witness firsthand, so-called Republican “leaders” who embrace hate groups for political gain is disgusting. This article cites Republicans who are afraid to publicly condemn hate groups and those who lead them. This philosophy among some Republicans is to “Unite the center right.” That strategy should be edited to say, “Unite the right and alt-right.” What’s next…tolerating sedition, treason, and overthrowing an election? That is actually happening. “I did not leave the Republican Party. The Republican Party left me.”

Vacillate or vaccinate

Dear ER:

Thank you, Dr. Pissed Off, for an intelligent and well written article (“Dr. Pissed Off: Vaccinations,” ER Jan. 7, 2020). It is strong encouragement for the dialogue you are calling for. I hope we can start the process of notifying people of the approximate date range for when they can expect to be vaccinated. The system should allow people to delay their vaccinations if they so desire, thereby letting others get their sooner.

Follow Florida

Dear ER:

My sister lives in Florida and she and her husband are already scheduled to receive their first vaccinations (“Dr. Pissed Off: Vaccinations,” ER Jan. 7, 2020). They are both retired, my sister is over 65, her husband is 80. It was very clear to them to go online and register to receive their shots. I think the ones in charge in California are flying by the seat of their pants, and making sure their cronies are taken care of first.

Nice town

Dear ER:

Thank you Easy Reader for showcasing the generosity in the community (“Skechers Relief Fund contributes to struggling restaurants,” ER Jan. 7, 2020). We live in a very special town with wonderfully generous people and companies like Michael Greenberg and the Skechers Foundation.

Westphal recognized

Dear ER:

This is one of the best sports bio articles I’ve read (“Westphal was South Bay’s greatest basketball player, ever,” ER Jan. 7, 2020). Beautiful, touching and informative. Thank you

Hermosa a model

Dear ER:

This is awesome (”Hermosa downtown streets to make way for bicyclists, diners,” ER Jan. 7, 2020). I wish more cities would create safer and more bike friendly communities in their downtown shopping and dining areas.

Pay to ride

Dear ER:

Maybe it’s time to have them register the bike and pay fees if they’re getting their own lane on the roads.
