Rajnath Singh unveils Beml's driverless metro cars for Mumbai

BENGALURU: Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday unveiled driverless metro cars, manufactured by Beml for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), at the defence PSU's Bengaluru complex on Friday.
Secretary (Defence Production) Raj Kumar and Beml chairman Deepak Kumar Hota were present on the occasion. The minister also launched the aerospace assembly hangar, situated within Beml’s Bengaluru complex, and unveiled the first indigenously manufactured Tatra Cabin by the defence PSU.

The union minister commended Beml for stepping up its indigenous technological capabilities and called the engineers the real warriors of Atmanirbhar Bharat.



Beml’s entry into metro manufacturing has been a defining moment in the urban transportation scenario in India. With a major market share in the country in direct competition with well-established international players, Beml has made its mark as the only Indian company in this high technology field, the PSU’s chairman Hota said.

Beml’s Bengaluru complex is manufacturing indigenously designed and developed modern driverless metro trains. The cars will operate on 25 kV AC traction power and equipped with CCTV surveillance and with the provision to carry passenger bicycles in the coaches. The cars are made up of stainless-steel body with a capacity of carrying 2280 passengers in a six-car metro train set.

BEML bagged a total order of 576 cars for MMRDA’s MRS1 project, the largest order ever, amidst stiff competition from international players and the supply will go on up to January 2024, Beml said in a press release.
