LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Troublemakers can’t be let off

Until now, I was satisfied just seeing President Donald Trump leave the White House, either peacefully or kicking and screaming.

But after witnessing him incite a mob of his supporters to storm the Capitol, an act of insurrection bordering on treason, in an effort to overthrow an election, the man should not walk away scot-free, and neither should the Republican senators and members of Congress who seditiously promoted the president’s false claims of the election being stolen from him.

Five people died. If we are a nation of laws, justice demands that the president, his mob supporters and those legislators who fueled the flames of deceit and mistrust be held accountable. Just as each of those thugs who stormed the Capitol are arrested and charged, so too should Trump be. He’s the instigator, the one who invited this mob to Washington, D.C., and the one who stirred them up to march on the Capitol.

Whether Trump resigns or not, he should face arrest, and the House was correct to follow through with impeachment. Sens. Josh Hawley of Missouri and Ted Cruz of Texas, and the members of Congress who participated in this coup, should be censured and pressured to resign. No one is above the law.
