Sam Johnstone is out of isolation and is back in training after missing West Brom’s games against Blackpool and Wolves with coronavirus.

Albion’s number one goalkeeper was a notable absentee at Molineux when the teams were announced on Saturday morning, and it was soon confirmed that Johnstone had not travelled - along with fellow Covid stricken Matty Phillips - because he had returned a positive test.

It meant that he missed his first league game since joining the Baggies in the summer of 2018, but deputy David Button proved to be a reliable back-up and he demonstrated his experience and vocal influence to great effect in the victory.

Still, it’s hoped that Johnstone’s absence won’t be prolonged and the news that he is already back in training is encouraging, even if he was alone in doing so.

Johnstone confirmed his return via social media when responding to a supporter on Saturday, and boss Sam Allardyce said of Johnstone post match: “He trained on Friday for the first time, not among the lads but on his own because that was allowed.

“He’ll come back into the picture next week, hopefully, depending on how his body feels after having Covid. Matt might be a bit longer. Grady [Diangana] pulled his hamstring in training on Friday, but hopefully that’s just a tweak and he won’t be too long either.

“There were some tired legs today, but hopefully no more problems injury wise ahead of Tuesday at West Ham, which is a big game in terms of can we get another result?”
