Topline

President Trump is on track to leave office with the lowest approval rating of his presidency after the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol by a mob of his supporters, polls show, and could become the lowest-rated of any modern-day president.

Key Facts

CNN polling released Sunday morning found 34% of respondents approve of Trump’s performance, one point below his previous low in the network’s surveys.

CNN found his approval rating remains strong among Republicans at 80%, though that’s still down 14 points from October.

A poll released Friday by the Pew Research Center offered a harsher review of Trump with just 29% of respondents saying they approve of his presidency.

Pew also found that the share of the president’s supporters who described his conduct as “poor” doubled from 10 to 20 percent in the past two months.

Key Background

Trump’s approval rating has oscillated between 35% and 45% throughout his presidency, according to polling averages maintained by FiveThirtyEight. If his ratings continue to decline as they have since early November, Trump could leave the White House as the worst-rated modern-day president, per FiveThirtyEight, a title currently held by Jimmy Carter (33.7%).
