SHIVAMOGGA: Union home minister Amit Shah laid the foundation stone for the campus of a newly raised battalion of CRPF's Rapid Action Force (RAF) at Bhadravati in Shivamogga district on Saturday.
In his speech after the bhoomi puja, Shah said: “I’m happy that the foundation stone of the 97th battalion of CRPF's RAF is being laid here. Construction work will be done at a cost of Rs 230 crore, and the complex will house administrative buildings, residence centres, hospitals, central schools and stadia.”
RAF, the anti-riots wing of CRPF, reaches the site of crisis in ‘zero-response time’.
It responds to the vulnerable sections of society and provides succour to victims.
The state government has provided 50.3 acre land for the unit at Bhadravati. A total of 1,270 troops of the newly raised 97th RAF battalion, including 106 women personnel, will be based here. The battalion will have a jurisdiction over a number of districts in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Goa and Puducherry for deployment by the Centre to deal with communal incidents, protests, riots or events having massive congregations, he said.
Early in the day, Shah was received at the HAL airport in Bengaluru by chief minister BS Yediyurappa, state BJP president Nalin Kumar Kateel and a battery of ministers. After the event at Bhadravati, Shah returned to Bengaluru to flag off Emergency Response Support System vehicles.
He later participated in the core committee meeting of state BJP. However, Shah did not give appointment to disgruntled MLAs, who were planning to meet him to complain against Yediyurappa and his style of functioning, sources said.
On Sunday, the home minister will participate in various programmes in Bagalkot and Belagavi districts. Before flying back to Delhi, he will visit the residence of former Union minister Suresh Angadi, who passed away due to Covid recently.
