Ahmedabad: Accidents to deaths ratio up 6%

The Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown restricting vehicular movement caused a dip in total number of road accidents and fatalities recorded in the city in 2020, in comparison to figures of 2019.

AHMEDABAD: The Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown restricting vehicular movement caused a dip in total number of road accidents and fatalities recorded in the city in 2020, in comparison to figures of 2019.
However, the ratio of deaths to accidents in city rose by 6% at the same time, showing an increase in risk of fatalities on city roads.

In 2020, the city recorded 309 fatalities from 978 road accidents (total deaths to accidents ratio 31.6%) in comparison to 351 deaths from 1,364 road accidents reported in 2019 (total deaths to accidents ratio 25.7%).

The city traffic police data shows there were 386 less road accidents and 42 fewer fatalities in the city in 2020, compared to 2019. But the ratio of deaths to accidents increased at the same time.
Eastern parts of the city reported almost an equal number of accidents as before, and more fatalities than in western city.
In 2020, the city reported a total number of 309 fatalities which comprise 118 in western parts of the city and 191 in eastern parts. In the same year, 978 road accidents were reported which include 439 total accidents in western parts and 539 in eastern parts.
In 2019, the western parts of city reported 161 fatalities and 592 total accidents and in the same year the eastern parts of Ahmedabad reported 190 fatalities and 772 total accidents.
Western Ahmedabad reported a drop in fatalities from 161fatalities in 2019 to 118 in 2020 and total accidents also dropped to 439 in 2020 from 592 in 2019.
