AGARTALA: The dawn to dusk general strike of Congress in Tripura on Monday protesting against the attack on it’s state president Pijush Kanti Biswas at Bishalgarh has evoked mixed response. Except for some stray incidents, bandh was peaceful and there was no report of any violence in the state.
Vehicular movement in the capital town and all urban areas was usual, local trains to and from Agartala moved normally but movement of private long distance buses in the morning was disrupted across the state.
Barring a few here, most of the shops, markets and business establishments functioned uninterruptedly. The attendance of government offices was normal and functions properly.
According to report, over 200 congress workers have been courted arrest while picketing. Two youth congress workers were allegedly injured in front of Congress Bhawan during the scuffle with police, which prevented the picketers from stopping vehicles.
Police said that adequate security measures have been put in place to keep the life normal across the state. The mobilisation of forces in sensitive locations was steeped up since Sunday night to foil any tension and peace breaking move from any corner.
The Pradesh Congress leaders said that the party did not want to go for massive picketing to prevent the people rather it appealed to the inner consciousness of the citizens to protest against the undemocratic and anti-people activities of BJP-IPFT government in the state. And, the people responded satisfactorily.
“The bandh was not called for a political agenda or to press for any issue, Congress appealed people to come out for restoring democracy and secure their fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution. The faction riddled BJP has lost all control over it’s cadres who have been indulging into anti-social activities, cut money business and corruption of development fund”, said senior party leader Tapas Dey.

As many as six congress men including its president Pijush Kanti Biswas and three police personnel were injured in an attack allegedly by BJP goons at Bishalgarh on Sunday when they were proceeding to attend a party program. Besides, all oppositions, ruling BJP also condemned the attack and demanded the government to conduct a fair enquiry into the incident to identify the criminals.
Meanwhile, opposition CPI-M alleged soon after the attack on Biswas, BJP cadres have attacked CPI-M Rajyasabha MP from Tripura Jharna Das Baidya along with his security personnel and three senior leaders of the party in separate incidents in Badharghat area of Agartala. The miscreants allegedly ransacked the house of MP and destroyed her properties in front of police.
