Social media fans have erupted over what’s been described as the best home series Australia has ever contested.

India sensationally pulled off an unimaginable win, despite having more than half of their first-choice team sidelined by injury.

Heading into the deciding Test at the Gabba, India’s pace attack was spearheaded by third-gamer Mohammed Siraj, with all five bowlers having a total of FOUR matches experience of between them.

The remarkable win is sure to have attracted record TV rankings, as fans took to social media to share their thoughts on the famous win.

“I repeat, his will be the best Test series of the Decade. Mark it. What a start to the Decade,” one user wrote.

“What a response after 36 all out. Best test series I have seen,” another wrote.

“The ashes in 2005 for me still but this is will go down as one of the best underdog story,” someone replied.

“We are witnessing one of truly great moments in sport,” 7Sport journalist Mel McLaughlin wrote.

Social media users were quick to point out the significance of the achievement, with Australia's winning streak at the Gabba - which dated back to 1988 - officially over.

"India going to break a 32-year unbeaten run by chasing down a record total. Not just by a few runs, but break the record by 92 and do it with a team featuring some net bowlers. An utterly insane achievement," one added.

Aussie captain Tim Paine’s sledges to Ravi Ashwin in the third Test in Sydney, warned the Indian batsman about Australia’s winning record at the the Gabba.

While Ashwin didn’t play in the series decider, Indian cricket fans hadn’t forgotten about the viral exchange, rubbing salt in the wounds of the hosts while celebrating on social media.

Speaking after the historic finish, Australian captain Tim Paine conceded his side was beaten in every element of the series when it came to crunch time.

"In the key moments, whether it was bat, ball or in the field, we were found wanting and completely outplayed by a really disciplined, really tough Indian side who fully deserved the series win,” Paine said.

Rishabh Pant was named player of the match for his game-winning unbeaten 89, while Pat Cummins was awarded player of the series.

In an incredibly classy gesture, India’s stand-in captain Ajinke Rahane presented Nathan Lyon with a signed shirt on behalf of the Indian team to congratulate him for his 100th Test match.
